Opioid misuse and overdose continue to devastate individuals, families, and communities across the nation, exacerbated by the isolation, economic challenges, and service gaps produced by the COVID-19 pandemic. As states work to address the pressing needs of people struggling with opioid addiction, many continue to embrace “upstream” solutions, including educational programming for children and teens, that focus on preventing opioid and other substance use before they develop into problems. There is a growing need to better understand the relationship of substance abuse prevention to recovery and, moreover, to understand both prevention and recovery as they relate to resiliency. Find out how PS@EDC is addressing this challenge.

Having access to good data and understanding how to use it is the foundation for effective prevention programming. Over the past three years, PS@EDC has worked closely with the Dedham Organization for Substance Awareness (DOSA) to integrate data into all of this successful coalition's decision-making.

In early June, 11 enthusiastic trainers from across the country participated in Prevention Solutions@EDC’s SAPST Virtual Training of Trainers (TOT). The TOT prepared participants to deliver the highly respected Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training—or SAPST—in their states and communities.

When New York’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services rolled out a new set of reporting requirements last spring, they saw a unique opportunity to empower and engage prevention practitioners in evaluation planning. To help them do so, they drew on the resources of Prevention Solutions@EDC.

PS@EDC Director Carol Oliver delivered a two-day workshop to 90+ technical assistance providers from Kentucky’s Department for Behavioral Health on ways to increase the effectiveness of their services, including strategies for assessing client needs, engaging key stakeholders, and selecting appropriate TA methods.

Since the onset of COVID-19, many states and communities have dramatically loosened restrictions on alcohol and marijuana use and access. This webinar explores the impact of these changes on the nation’s health.
