About the Academy

Description 

The Zero Suicide Academy is a two-day training for health and behavioral healthcare systems operating within jails and prisons that seek to dramatically reduce suicides among individuals in their care. Using the Zero Suicide Framework, participants will learn how to incorporate best and promising practices into their organizations and processes to improve care and safety for individuals at risk. Zero Suicide faculty provides both interactive presentations and small group sessions, collaborating with participants to develop organization-specific action plans.

Dates

Selected applicants are expected to commit to participation for the following dates/ times:

Pre-Academy: October 16, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm ET 
Academy Day 1: November 13, 2024 from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm ET 
Academy Day 2: November 14, 2024 from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm ET 
Post-Academy: December 18, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm ET

Objectives

The objectives of the Zero Suicide Academy are to:   

• Provide organizations interested in adopting a Zero Suicide approach with the skills and support necessary to launch and sustain their effort;   
• Create collaborative links between participating organizations in order to share lessons learned, unique perspectives, knowledge, skills and training decisions; and   
• Support systems to design a successful action plan for the Zero Suicide implementation.

How To Register

Participant Eligibility

Only teams working within a correctional setting (jail, prison, juvenile justice facility, etc.) are qualified to register.  
 
Registrants are to attend the Zero Suicide Academy® with a team of 3-6 individuals including the person identified as the lead for the system's Zero Suicide initiative. Recommendations for the team composition include:

• At least one senior leader/management from Corrections with responsibility and with authority for implementation decisions (e.g., unit manager, Captain, Clinical Director) 
• At least one person who manages your electronic health records (EHR) system, quality improvement, or risk management. 
• At least one person (e.g., case manager, psychologist, social worker, nurse, other) who provides direct care to incarcerated individuals. 
• At least one person who supervises health and/or behavioral health services. 
• A person with lived experience (i.e. suicide attempt survivor, staff or member of community advisory committee with previous incarceration experience).

Registration Instructions

Organizations wishing to be considered for the Zero Suicide Academy will submit the registration by the due date. The registration will be reviewed by Zero Suicide Institute (ZSI); a complete application will be required including at least 3 team members selected to attend and the completed organizational self-study. Applications are due by October 18, 2024. 

The Zero Suicide Academy application consists of: 

1. A letter of commitment from Corrections leadership (i.e. Warden, director of medical and/or behavioral health services) and/or CEO or other leadership from your organization. Click here for sample template 
2. A narrative that, in two to four pages, responds to the following:
   • Briefly describe the members of your team and the relevant skills, knowledge, and experience they bring to the Zero Suicide Academy. 
   • What are your team’s goals for participating in the Zero Suicide Academy and what does the team hope to learn during the training?
