Zero Suicide Framework: A Systems Change Approach to Reducing Suicides in Correctional Settings

Zero-suicide strategies and practices are applicable to system-wide transformation wherever health and behavioral healthcare is delivered, including in the corrections setting. 

Examples of Zero Suicide implementation in corrections include: 

  • Developing policies and procedures to help mitigate risk to the institution (Lead)
  • Training all staff to recognize warning signs of suicide and respond according to protocol (Train) 
  • Collecting data to support continuous quality improvement and positive outcomes (Improve)
  • Creating collaborative, person-centered, safety planning that is consistent with the limitations of correctional settings (Engage)
