EDC’s Chuck Klevgaard and Elly Stout will host a booth at the 2024 National Prevention Network Conference (NPN) in Phoenix, AZ.

Connect with EDC at the 2024 NPN Conference

The purpose of the NPN Conference is to highlight the latest research in the substance use prevention field. It provides a forum for prevention professionals, coalition leaders, researchers, and federal partners to share research, best practices, and promising evaluation results for the purpose of integrating research into prevention practice.

This year we will be holding two presentations, both on Thursday, August 15th.

Our Presentations

1. Building a Supportive Environment: Strategies for Preventing Substance Misuse in Older Adults

When: Thursday, August 15th from 9:15am- 10:15am MT

Where: Room Palm 3AB | The Arizona Grand

Presenters: Chuck Klevgaard, Pat Zuber-Wilson

Description: There is growing concern among prevention specialists and public health officials regarding older adults and substance use, misuse, and increasing substance use disorders. Substance use in older adults is complicated and is often overlooked, especially when individuals are experiencing other aging related health conditions. While the number of older adults experiencing substance use disorders dramatically increased in the last 20 years, prevention services have not been tailored to the needs of older adults.

This session will highlight the growing problem, approaches to understanding the older adult population in your community with an emphasis on psychosocial factors, and available strategies. Additionally, you will hear directly from preventionists who are implementing programming with this population.

Session 1 Resources:

Supporting Older Adults Handout: This handout addresses the growing concern among prevention specialists and public health officials regarding older adults and substance use, misuse, and increasing substance use disorders, and offers tips on how prevention specialists can take action.

2. Equitable and Innovative Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response in Chicago

When: Thursday, August 15th from 10:30am- 11:30am MT

Where: Noble Room | The Arizona Grand

Presenters: Sarah Gabriella Hernandez, Chuck Klevgaard

Description: The Education Development Center (EDC) worked closely with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) in leading evaluation capacity building with agencies implementing opioid overdose prevention strategies. Through our tailored technical assistance and culturally responsive engagement, we supported agencies in outcome measurement, continuous quality improvement, and peer learning. In 2023, EDC convened agencies for an evaluation roundtable session in which agencies engaged in structured peer sessions to co-develop ideas, innovations, and community centered solutions to opioid overdose response and prevention in Chicago. We analyzed and compiled roundtable discussions into a set of core recommendations for CDPH.

In this presentation, we will share these findings and discuss emergent and innovative strategies that can advance equitable opioid overdose prevention.

Session 2 Resources:

CDPH's Office of Substance Use and Recovery Services: This resource highlights the programs offered by the Chicago Department of Public Health's Office of Substance Use and Recovery Services. It also provides facts and statistics regarding narcotics in Chicago.

CDPH's Crisis Assistance Response & Engagement Program (CARE): Using alternate response teams, opioid response teams, and multidisciplinary response teams, the Chicago Department of Public Health's Crisis Assistance Response & Engagement (CARE) Program incorporates behavioral health professionals into the City's 911 response system. This flyer outlines the CARE Program's services, approach, and reach.

CDPH's Public Health Vending Machines: Created by the Chicago Department of Public Health, Public Health Vending Machines are vending machines stocked with harm reduction products such as Narcan, fentanyl test kits, xylazine test kits, general hygiene kits, menstrual hygiene kits, socks, and underwear. This resource covers where the machines are located, how to access their products, and the mission behind the product.

CDPH's Trauma-Informed Centers of Care: From the Chicago Department of Public Health, this resource highlights the different trauma- informed mental health services provided by the department in 2022. This flyer shows a list of each mental health service provided in Chicago along with its description, the frequency in which the service was provided, and the location of service centers across the city.

Illinois Helpline's Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR): This flyer calls attention to the Illinois Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances' new program; Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR). With MAR, helpline callers can  request treatment for opioid use disorder and be connected to a care manager for immediate access to medication and counseling services. Community-Led Suicide Prevention

EDC’s Community-Led Suicide Prevention (CLSP) provides tools to help communities strengthen their suicide prevention efforts. EDC’s free online Community-Led Suicide Prevention Toolkit provides resources that any local community can use. The model gives local suicide prevention groups the tools they need to strengthen the seven key elements of evidence-informed, equitable, and sustainable CLSP efforts.

EDC developed the CLSP model and toolkit with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) via the Safe States Alliance. Currently, EDC works with community groups to implement the model through blended funding from multiple partners and funders.
