Applying for SAMHSA Prevention Grants? EDC can help!

Funding for SAMHSA's Prevention Grants will support States, Tribal Territories and community-based organizations to address substance misuse, strengthen the behavioral health workforce, and support community efforts around mental health concerns and suicide prevention.

With decades of grant-funded experience and expertise across a range of content areas, including Zero Suicide, substance misuse and problem gambling, and K–12 MTSS and mental health supports, EDC offers training and consultation services that can help organizations meet grant requirements while:

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) 

Applications Due July 27th

Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) presents an opportunity for SEAs, LEAs and public and private non-profits to promote the social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and suicide prevention of children and youth in K12 education settings.  Award recipients will build collaborative partnerships to develop and sustain frameworks that address mental health, substance use, and co-occurring disorders. As a result of the STANDUP Act, SAMHSA is providing 5 additional points to applicants who include a suicide prevention education and awareness training and policy development plan in their Project AWARE application.

EDC Services and Expertise to Support Your Application
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for Mental Health

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for Mental Health is designed to help state education agencies and school districts develop sustainable, multi-tiered frameworks that promote student mental health and well-being while strengthening prevention, early identification, intervention, and referral systems. Through expert-led technical assistance, district teams engage in needs assessment, strategic planning, coaching, and professional development to implement sustainable systems-level improvements aligned with Project AWARE's three-tiered public health framework. EDC helps districts strengthen Tier 1 social and emotional well-being and mental health promotion, systems for identifying students in need of support, Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions, and data systems that drive continuous improvement. Services can be provided to cohorts of districts through a state education agency or directly to individual school districts. Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for Digital Wellness is designed to help state education agencies and school districts develop sustainable, multi-tiered frameworks that promote the healthy use of technology and strengthen student mental health and well-being. Through expert-led technical assistance, district teams engage in needs assessment, strategic planning, coaching, and professional development to implement sustainable systems-level improvements aligned with Project AWARE's three-tiered public health framework. EDC helps districts strengthen policies and practices that promote healthy technology use, identify students experiencing technology-related mental health concerns, implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports, and strengthen data systems. Multi-Tiered Suicide Prevention (MTSP) for Schools

Multi-Tiered Suicide Prevention (MTSP) for Schools is designed to assist educational leaders in developing suicide prevention policies and protocols using evidence-based strategies across a multi-tiered system of support.  Through expert-led technical assistance, school teams engage in assessment and strategic planning to implement sustainable systems-level changes in alignment with existing behavioral and life-skill programming.  MTSP for Schools can support Project AWARE Grantees in creating a suicide prevention education and awareness training and policy plan that aligns with the STANDUP Act. Collaborative Safety Planning Training

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) is a free, self-paced training to support the creation of environmental safety when there is risk for suicide.  Health and behavioral health professionals can access this training for free to help them feel more prepared to talk with individuals with suicide risk and their support persons about means safety. 

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR)

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) helps health and behavioral health care providers feel confident providing compassionate suicide care to individuals with suicide risk.  AMSR’s research-informed risk formulation model helps professionals navigate challenging conversations, address systemic barriers, and identify the appropriate level of care based on current suicide risk.

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) is a free, self-paced training to support the creation of environmental safety when there is risk for suicide.  Health and behavioral health professionals can access this training for free to help them feel more prepared to talk with individuals with suicide risk and their support persons about means safety. 

EDC's Evaluation Services

EDC's Evaluation Services help Project AWARE grantees meet SAMHSA's evaluation and reporting requirements while strengthening program implementation and continuous improvement. EDC evaluators support development of evaluation plans, performance measurement, data collection and reporting, analysis of program outcomes, and quality improvement throughout the life of the grant. Services can be provided as an external evaluator or in partnership with an internal evaluation team. Mental Health Awareness Training Grants 

Applications Due July 27th

Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) Grants support the implementation of mental health awareness and literacy training to increase the number of individuals prepared to respond to anyone experiencing mental health concerns or at risk for mental illness.  Training programs are expected to include recognition of signs and symptoms, de-escalation practices, community resources, and strategies to connect individuals to appropriate services. A variety of public and private agencies are eligible for MHAT Grants.

National Community-Led Suicide Prevention (CLSP) Academy 

National Community-Led Suicide Prevention (CLSP) Academy brings together community coalitions to learn best practices in developing comprehensive, effective, and sustainable suicide prevention through EDC’s CLSP Toolkit. Community coalitions from across the United States bring teams of 2-6 coalition members together to learn best practices in strategic planning, implementing comprehensive approaches to suicide prevention, and forming and maintaining community partnerships to ensure effective collaboration in suicide prevention, risk response, referrals to suicide-specific services, and postvention across settings and sectors. National Zero Suicide Academy

The National Zero Suicide Academy is a 3-part series designed to support health and behavioral health organizations to implement Zero Suicide, a systems-level framework that transforms suicide care using a continuous quality improvement approach.  Designed for organizational teams of up to six participants, this collaborative learning opportunity combines a comprehensive overview of the framework and available resources with activities to support organizational assessment of current practices, action planning for implementation, and support from experts in implementation who share their experiences.

GLS Campus Suicide Prevention Grants 

Applications Due July 27th

GLS Campus Suicide Prevention Grants provide an opportunity for institutes of higher education to develop a comprehensive suicide prevention plan, including policies and protocols, evidence-based practices, and collaboration with community partners in alignment with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s (SPRC) Comprehensive Approach to Suicide Prevention. As co-leads of SPRC, EDC staff are well-positioned to support colleges and universities who are awarded this grant.

The Zero Suicide framework is a systems-level approach to safer suicide care that is delivered in health and behavioral health care settings, including those on college and university campuses. It includes many of the grant required activities and aligns with SPRC’s Comprehensive Approach to Suicide Prevention.
