About the Conference

Hosted by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) Exchange is the nation’s largest forum on SEL. The SEL Exchange is a unique and timely opportunity for those who are committed to creating caring, productive, and equitable schools and communities that develop the whole child and ensure that all students can thrive. With demand for SEL at an all-time high, now is the time to come together, share what we know, and anchor ourselves in advancing high-quality research, practice, and policies.

Climate Change Education and SEL: Helping Children Protect the Earth and Their Wellbeing

Shai Fuxman | November 13th at 3:15-4:30 PM in Room E261
Topic
A growing number of students struggle with anxiety triggered by the mere mention of climate change; they suffer from what mental health experts call Climate Anxiety. Climate change and the anxiety it provokes require us to provide students with academic knowledge and social and emotional skills to help them become better stewards of our planet while also caring for their own mental health. This workshop will provide research-based practices to integrate SEL skills into climate change education.

Levers for Equitable Approaches to Promoting Belonging in the Classroom

Akira Gutierrez Renzulli and Tori Todd | November 13th at 3:15-4:30 PM in Room E266
Topic

Students are ready for learning when they feel safe, supported, and connected at school. We propose that sense of belonging relies on mutually beneficial interactions between student identity and positive relationships within the school and their broader community. Participants will collaborate to plan for practices that foster a sense of belonging by identifying rich opportunities to celebrate student identities and leverage social capital to the benefit of academic engagement and overall thriving.

Promoting Educational Equity for Newcomer Populations through Social-Emotional Learning

Lauren Gilman and Sara Niño | November 14th at 10:45-12:00 PM in Room E252
Topic

How can school districts integrate effective practices to support the well-being of “newcomer” students and families? Now more than ever, educators are called upon to build the academic, social, and emotional capacities of immigrant and refugee learners. In this session, we’ll examine ways of integrating student well-being at district, school, and classroom levels within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). You’ll share strategies and come away with action steps.
